Depuis presque 40 ans, François Le Diascorn parcourt les États-Unis d’est en ouest avec son Nikon pour en rapporter des images en noir et blanc insolites et décalées. Chaque fois qu’il découvrait une nouvelle excentricité de son pays, mon grand ami américain Josh Ewing, rarement étonné, le plus souvent amusé et quelquefois consterné, s’exclamait : « Only in America ! » Ce qui voulait dire : « Il n’y a qu’en Amérique qu’on peut voir ça ! » Pour le meilleur et pour le pire. La société américaine toujours en marche (rarement en marche arrière malgré tout), toujours à la découverte d’une nouvelle frontière, valorise l’éclatement, l’exceptionnel et en définitive amalgame comme norme une certaine forme du déséquilibre. C’est ce qui, pour nous Européens, représente l’excès américain, un grain de folie qui, à la fois, découle et remet en question le monde moderne. Même dans ses formes les plus conservatrices, cette société intègre des éléments de fantastique, d’étrange, d’insolite.
Ce livre contient des images réalisées sur une période de plus de trente-cinq ans. « Ce sont des images faites en Amérique plutôt que des images d’Amérique, des images de mon Amérique à moi, une Amérique insolite qui est en même temps banale, complètement folle et plus que raisonnable. »

Every time he discovered some new eccentricity in his country, my great friend from the States Josh Ewing, rarely astonished, most often amused and sometimes dismayed, would exclaim, “Only in America!” He meant that it was only in America where one could see such things! For better or for worse. American society, always on the move (rarely going backwards, it must be said), always discovering new frontiers, is a society which values rupture, values the exceptional, and which ultimately is able to combine a certain form of imbalance into the norm. This is what we Europeans see as the American excess, the element of folly in that society which both derives from and puts into question the modern world. American society, even in its most conservative aspects, ends up by integrating within it those elements of “folly”: fantastic and strange, weird and original. These photographs have been taken over a period of more than thirty-five years. These are photos taken in the US rather than of the US, photos of my America based on my personal experience of it, a weird America which is at one and the same time very ordinary, completely crazy, and absolutely sane.
